It depends, I think if you have a certain primary quest there's a few groups of afllicted that spawn across the path.

Almost a 1/2 hour and no sighting. Last time it took all of 10 minutes. Maybe he's in a sneaky spot this time. Or so obvious everyone's missing it.

I do believe I have that quest on my most liable character to have gotten to Nicholas.

However, it doesn't matter now. Because he isn't there anymore :]

If you have Chasing Zenmai, Drunken Master and Feed the Hungry you might come across some monsters to kill, but since the Afflicted take a few seconds to reach you in Feed the Hungry I'd still reckon you could make it to the Traveler, complete the trade, and map out before any of them noticed you. I can't think of a Primary Quest which would affect the path to The Traveler's location.
